02 Coordinating construction around active airport operations

Managing Construction Within a Highly Regulated Airport Environment

01

The project was performed at an active airport facility, requiring construction activities to be carefully coordinated around ongoing airport operations and safety requirements.

02

As a federal project, the work involved strict protocols, regulations, and coordination between multiple stakeholders, including DFW Airport, and airlines.

03

Limited working hours created scheduling challenges, with much of the work requiring nighttime execution. Crews had restricted windows to complete setup, construction activities, and site restoration before airport operations resumed.

04

Airport security requirements impacted workforce access and material deliveries. All personnel and materials had to pass through controlled security processes before reaching the construction area.

05

The construction area had to be isolated from airport operations due to safety concerns, while surrounding airport activities continued to operate.

06

The project involved working near an active airport fuel station. Welding activities required additional coordination, including temporary fuel station shutdowns and approval from airport personnel before work could proceed.

07

Material movement and site access required detailed planning due to airport traffic, vehicle operations, and aircraft movement restrictions.

08

Multiple teams and stakeholders required continuous communication throughout the project to address inspections, approvals, operational concerns, and construction coordination.

03 The Solution

Coordinated Planning for Safe and Efficient Airport Construction

To successfully complete the reconstruction within the operational constraints of DFW Airport, the project team focused on detailed preconstruction planning, communication, and coordination with all involved parties. The team worked closely with airport representatives, inspectors, subcontractors, and facility personnel to establish clear work plans and ensure crews were prepared before arriving onsite. For the complete reconstruction, the existing structure was removed and replaced with a new steel canopy system. The second canopy received targeted repairs, including removal and replacement of damaged materials caused by vehicle impacts. Because of the active airport environment, construction activities were carefully planned around security procedures, limited work windows, aircraft movement, and airport operational requirements. Additional coordination was required for welding activities near the fuel station. The team worked with airport personnel to safely schedule fuel station shutdowns, complete welding operations, and restore operations after construction activities were completed. Through strong communication and front-end planning, the project team was able to maximize limited work periods while maintaining strict safety standards.

04 Project Result

Delivering Structural Improvements While Supporting Airport Operations

Through detailed planning, stakeholder coordination, and safe construction practices, the project team successfully completed the steel canopy reconstruction and repair work while operating within the requirements of an active airport facility. The completed work provided structurally sound canopy systems to support airport operations while meeting the safety, quality, and operational expectations required for a highly regulated aviation environment.
